JKV in the News: Combatting Perceptions of Senior Living

Blog headline photo with text overlay "How HRA, John Knox Village, Beztak Combat Perceptions of Senior Living as Nursing Homes

“Having the amenities, having a Green House Model®…. it just reinforces that we’re not ‘grandma’s nursing home’ anymore.” — Kim Ali, John Knox Village VP of Sales & Marketing

For all that senior living operators have done to change the perception of the industry, many prospects still conflate independent living and assisted living with nursing homes.

That immediate reaction can have an impact on sales efforts.  Operators and their marketing teams then have to make an effort to showcase what the industry is actually like today and how it has changed since a prospect may have moved their own family members into a community.

Part of that reaction is fear-based, according to Ginger Atwood, national director of marketing and sales at Harbor Retirement Associates.  Losing independence, becoming isolated and being unable to afford to live in a senior living community are all worries on the minds of older adults and their families.

“They’re perceiving it as a crisis-driven situation to begin with, rather than a lifestyle choice,” Atwood told Senior Housing News.  “The challenge is as people wait longer and longer to make the decision to move into senior living, it can become a crisis situation.”

While education efforts with marketing materials is still the primary tool used to shift that perception, operators are also deploying campaigns to help better inform decision making adult children.  The process of showcasing the differences is easier than in previous years, and in some instances is less of a problem for marketing teams, such as the team at continuing care retirement community John Knox Village in Pompano Beach.

“They’re more fixated on the type of living arrangement they’re going to choose versus exactly what they’re going to get, which is that continuum of care for their healthcare,” Kim Ali, Vice President of Sales and Marketing said.  “Less than probably 3% of prospects that walk in the door even wants us to tour them in higher care, which is a little shocking because that’s exactly what they’re buying.”

John Knox Village, Pompano Beach, one of the largest single-site senior living campuses in the country, is dealing with fewer prospects associating the community with being akin to a nursing home, but the worry is still there.  Instead, it utilizes a community-driven newspaper to highlight what happens around the community with articles written by current residents, according to Ali.

While residents fear a loss of independence and losing parts of their lives, Ali said John Knox Village, Pompano Beach puts particular emphasis on its Green House Model® offerings, which allow higher acuity residents to still maintain a sense of privacy and security as they age in place.  What the sales and marketing team at the CCRC focus on for those residents is letting them know that they still will have full access to everything the community has to offer so they are not siloed or isolated.

“Having amenities, having a Green House Model®…. it just reinforces that we’re not ‘grandma’s nursing home’ anymore,” Ali said.

First Female CEO in JKV’s 58-Year History Brings a Forward-Thinking Vision for the Future of Senior Living

POMPANO BEACH, FL | January 5, 2026 — John Knox Village (JKV) (www.johnknoxvillage.com) in Pompano Beach, FL, announces the historic appointment of Melissa B. Honig, LNHA, MHSA, as its new President & Chief Executive Officer. Honig becomes the first woman to hold the CEO position in JKV’s 58-year history, and is its 14th Chief Executive Officer.

Honig steps into the CEO role with a long-standing connection to JKV and a deep appreciation for its resident-centered philosophy. Honig states, “I felt called to return to a place that left a lasting impression on me. My first encounter with JKV was in 2011 during my work with The Green House Project, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation initiative. I am inspired by JKV’s commitment to forward-thinking senior living solutions. JKV was the first community in Florida to adopt the Green House model, an innovative, person-directed care environment that demonstrates a commitment to improving the lives of both residents and team members.”

In her previous position, Honig served as the Executive Director of Valle Verde in Santa Barbara, a HumanGood Life Plan Community, California’s largest nonprofit provider of senior housing and the sixth-largest nonprofit senior living organization in the nation. During her tenure, Valle Verde was rated the nation’s number-one retirement community by U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek. She served there for the past 11 years before moving to Boca Raton this fall with her husband and son to join John Knox Village.

Recently retired Dr. Salvatore Barbera, longtime JKV Board Member and President/CEO for the past four years, shared in Honig’s leadership. “Melissa Honig is the right leader for JKV at the right time. She has an exceptional ability to stay focused on people with intention. She is highly educated and has built an impressive career in senior living. I have full confidence that Melissa will take JKV to new heights while continuing to honor and value both residents and team members,” states Dr. Barbera.

Honig’s leadership priorities include building strong relationships across campus, fostering organizational transparency, and advancing initiatives that elevate the quality of life, services, and amenities for residents. Under her leadership, JKV will continue strengthening its reputation as a national model for engaged, purposeful, and wellness-focused senior living.

JKV’s Board of Directors expressed resounding enthusiasm for Honig’s appointment. “Melissa’s leadership style, deep industry expertise, and unwavering commitment to resident well-being and team support made her the ideal choice to lead John Knox Village,” said Jack Crissy, Chairman of the Board. “We are confident she will inspire our community and guide JKV into an exciting new chapter.”

Senior Housing News Architectural Award no bg

John Knox Village Takes Second Place in Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards

John Knox Village of Florida (JKV) has proudly been awarded as the Second Place winner of SHNA 2024 — Senior Housing News Architecture & Design Awards in the category of Independent Living for its new luxury apartment building, Westlake.  The nomination was submitted in this fiercely competitive category by our architects, Perkins Eastman, who in collaboration with JKV, designed the community’s new construction at the heart of the campus.  The award recognizes senior living communities with newly constructed apartments.

Westlake, JKV’s newest residential neighborhood includes 147 state-of-the-art apartment homes, including a rooftop area for grilling and relaxing, with a first floor featuring two dining venues, a theater, an art studio, and technology classroom where JKV’s Technology Coordinator teaches throughout the week.

John Knox Village is revolutionizing senior living by introducing an innovative hospitality and wellness model. To kickstart this transformation, the design team at Perkins Eastman collaborated with Vice President of Operations at JKV, Thom Price and the executive team in a comprehensive campus master plan. The plan highlighted the importance of spaces between existing buildings, revealing a crucial missing element: a central campus heart that aligns with the long-term vision for both residents and the community. The site was reimagined as an ‘experience district,’ with a strong lakeside pedestrian-centric path connecting social, cultural, fitness, dining, and residential spaces.
