I’m not sure I’m ready for a senior living community. Isn’t it better to wait until I need to move?
Senior living experts agree that the best time to make a move is while you’re active and enjoying good health. Once you do move, you’ll discover that you have time to do things you’ve always wanted to do. The maintenance-free lifestyle will free you from the work and worry of maintaining a home. While waiting until you need assistance, you’ll miss out on the many joys of an active, rewarding, and fulfilling life. It could also mean that you may not pass the health assessment required for admission. If you’re at the right age but not yet retired, you should know that many residents of John Knox Village are still pursuing their careers!
What is John Knox Village and what makes this community a cut above from the rest?
John Knox Village is a Life Plan community that includes independent living residences for active senior residents, plus assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing care options, should you ever need them, all on a beautifully landscaped 70-acre campus in Pompano Beach, on Southeast Florida’s Gold Coast.
John Knox Village is a not-for-profit Life Plan community where you will enjoy a lifestyle; rich in opportunities. These include on- and off-campus programs, events, and activities that offer physical, intellectual, cultural, educational and spiritual benefits.
What is a Life Plan?
A Life Plan is a contract within the community that entitles you to live in one of our independent living apartment homes or villas. If, or when, your health situation changes, as a John Knox Village Life Plan resident you are entitled to the unlimited use of Gardens West, our assisted living residence, as well as the highly-rated rehab, long-term nursing and memory care centers, The Woodlands, and Seaside Cove.
Paying the Life Plan Entrance Fee assures you of a lifetime of healthcare services, with no time limits on the services provided. The Life Plan service at John Knox Village is also integrated with our Life Enrichment Program, which includes fitness, nutrition, activities, health screenings and more, all designed to improve your quality of life.
Choosing a Life Plan community means you will know where, and from whom, you will receive healthcare, and that your loved ones will be spared the difficulty of making care decisions during a health crisis.
Does John Knox Village have a five-star rating?
As of February 2014, John Knox Village has earned a five-star rating from the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Our skilled team is a recipient of the Governor’s Gold Seal. This honor is awarded to only a small fraction of more than 700 skilled nursing centers in Florida.
What types of residences are available?
We offer residences ranging from one to two bedroom apartment homes, with many sizes and floor plans available. In addition to these, we offer villas, which are single-story attached homes with one and two bedroom floor plans.
Will I need to carry homeowner’s insurance on my residence?
John Knox Village provides insurance for the buildings and grounds. As a resident, your only insurance need would be a renter’s policy to cover personal property and liability.
May I decorate my apartment home or villa as I wish?
You may furnish and decorate your apartment home or villa to reflect your personal taste.
Is living at John Knox Village affordable?
The cost of living at John Knox Village compares very favorably with the cost of maintaining a home. Many residents find that they can live at John Knox Village for less than they could in their former homes. Completing our Compare the Value worksheet will help point out the cost benefits.
Will I be able to bring my car?
Absolutely! Residents are encouraged to keep driving as long as they are able to do so safely. Parking is provided at no cost.
Is the Entrance Fee or Monthly Service Fee subject to change?
Once a deposit contract is signed, the Entrance Fee is locked in. Monthly Service Fees change annually to reflect changes in the cost of providing your daily services.
What fees will you pay as a resident of John Knox Village?
As a John Knox Village resident, you will pay a one-time Entrance Fee, along with a Monthly Service Fee. These affordable fees entitle you to occupy a maintenance-free apartment home or villa. It also allows you to enjoy the community’s services and amenities while providing for coverage of future healthcare costs, as outlined in the Life Care contract.
You may also be eligible for significant IRS medical deductions on both the Entrance Fee and Monthly Service Fee. We recommend consulting a professional financial planner to help determine your eligibility for deductions. A member of our professional staff can also answer your questions and provide details.

Which healthcare services are included in the Monthly Service Fee?
A care contract entitles you to move from independent living to assisted living, skilled nursing care and memory care. It allows couples to continue living here; even if one of them requires additional assistance or care while the other stays in independent living.

What types of contracts are available?
Type A is an all-inclusive contract which provides for your future health care needs by providing unlimited access to assited living, memory care and nursing care included in the Monthly Service Fee which is based on the residence you occupy. A 50% refundable option is also available.
Type C contract provides all the amenities as a Type A with the exception of the health care benefit. You pay for health care services as needed and will be charged the prevailing rate less a resident discount. A Type C 50% refundable option is also available.
Which services are included in the Monthly Service Fee?
- Declining balance meal plan with special diet menus
- Bi-weekly housekeeping and weekly bed linen service
- 24-hour security staff throughout the community
- Gated and controlled access to the community
- A comprehensive monitoring system including emergency pull cords, daily assurance check-in system, smoke detectors and sprinklers
- Transportation via buses and golf carts within the community
- Scheduled transportation to medical appointments, shopping, banks and houses of worship
- Interior and exterior maintenance of the residence
- All utilities except telephone and Internet
- Property taxes
- Village nurses, who provide 24/7 emergency and referral services through our clinic
- On-campus assisted living at Gardens West*
- Full-time nursing and memory care at The Woodlands and Seaside Cove.*
- Memory & Respite Care
