Pompano Beach — Ten residents at John Knox Village, including many who were veterans of the Vietnam War, were awarded handmade quilts created with distinctive, patriotic patterns Tuesday in a highly emotional ceremony that pulled double duty as a celebration for the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday.
The event, organized by the Quilts of Valor Foundation in conjunction with the Quilt Guild by the Sea, honors now-retired veterans who served in numerous capacities in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. The intricate, colorful, full-size quilts are custom-made by scores of volunteers, taking between 40 to 60 hours to complete. Each quilt is designated for a specific veteran and awarded to the service member in a solemn presentation in front of a packed auditorium at John Knox Village. The veteran is then “wrapped” in the quilt as yet another testament to the nation’s debt of gratitude for their service.
