  • How can I help my family understand the reasons for my move?

It goes without saying — moving from your present home to a residential senior community is a big decision. In many ways, it's a family decision that affects not only you — but your loved ones, too.

That's why it's important that your family members are fully on board and support you in the decision you make.

Talk it over with your family. Discuss candidly the primary reasons why you are considering a move (e.g. health concerns, minimizing household chores and home maintenance, opportunities for socializing).

Your transition will be made easier by ensuring your family's questions are answered, and they are well-informed. When the time is right, offer them a tour of John Knox Village. Let them meet our staff members and residents and hear first-hand how supportive the community is and how satisfied current residents are.

These testimonies will go a long way toward easing your loved ones' concerns and convincing them you are making the right move.

Above all, remember that your children and other family members love and care about you. Your happiness and well-being are their utmost concerns. When they see you are confident about your future, they will be confident — and supportive, too.

  • What can I expect in the way of a continuum of care as my health needs change?

John Knox Village is a premier Life Care Retirement Community, offering a full continuum of care, ranging from fully independent units to assistance with personal care in assisted living apartments to long-term care in a skilled nursing center.

CCRCs offer a tiered approach to the aging process, accommodating residents' changing needs. Upon entering, healthy adults can reside independently in villas or apartments. When assistance with everyday activities becomes necessary, they can move into assisted living or nursing care accommodations.

These communities give older adults the option to live in one location for the duration of their life, with much of their future care already figured out. This can provide a great level of comfort to seniors and their loved ones and take much of the stress out of the caregiving relationship.

    Types of Contracts:

At John Knox Village, we offer two basic types of contracts for CCRCs:

Life Care or Extended Contract: This is the most expensive option, but offers unlimited assisted living, medical treatment and skilled nursing care without additional charges.

Rental Contract – or Preview to Life Care: This allows seniors who are seriously considering our Life Care contract the opportunity to experience the lifestyle at John Knox Village. However, there are a limited number of units available, and more importantly, it does not include any of the health care benefits.

It is very important to review each option as well as the long-term financial plan to support them. It is also important to know that the community being considered will be financially viable over the long term.

Request a weekend stay at the community to ensure it's the right choice.

  • What can I expect from John Knox Village in helping me to preserve my finances?

For those of retirement age, preservation of available finances is of utmost importance now more than ever. Residents have a right to expect that the senior living community they choose as their home is governed and operated in a manner that allows it to remain financially sound and meet its long-term commitments to residents.

John Knox Village is a financially sound, fiscally responsible organization. We adhere to established industry standards for full financial disclosure concerning our operations. These Best Practices are established by LeadingAge. In addition, John Knox Village is regulated by the Office of Insurance Regulation, a division of the Florida Department of Financial Services. Also, our assisted living, Health Center and Home Health Agency are licensed under the Agency for Healthcare Administration.

It is important to us that each resident thoroughly understands our overall financial condition, the specific terms of the agreement for housing, care and other services, as well as our policies governing refund and/or repayment of initial entry fees.

In addition, our Life Care communities do not raise monthly fees when a resident transitions from independent living to another level of care. Thus residents' investments are protected from ever-increasing health care costs. Moreover, monthly fees are predictable, as fee increases occur only annually if necessary to meet the cost of living.

  • What is your philosophy toward giving back to the community?

On any given day, throughout the year, John Knox Village residents and staff are accomplishing amazing deeds. Some residents are preparing bag lunches for the homeless. Others are busy and collecting school supplies for local needy children. Personal hygiene products are being placed in “Hope Totes” by Housekeeping and Plant Operations employees. A constant flow of funds are contributed to numerous worthy causes.

These ardent activities and more are all part of John Knox Village’s Sharing and Caring Program. As a nonprofit organization, John Knox Village first established the social accountability program in 2008 to maintain vital connections with social organizations in the community.

The program continues to assist a variety of recipients, including: grandparents raising grandchildren; veterans; schools, seniors struggling to provide in-home care to loved ones; sports programs geared to teaching leadership skills to our youth; and support programs for those who are homeless, hurting and in need of hope.

These organizations greatly depend on financial and volunteer support from others to keep their programs and services thriving.

No matter what the cause, John Knox Village will continue to be a role model organization that caters to the hearts of Broward County’s needy residents.

Adult Child,
Loved One, Friend

  • They say they're not "ready", but I see signs that they are.

Often, you're in the best position to know when a parent or a close loved one is ready to make the move to a senior living community. You see the signs. Maybe Mom is feeling lonely, or Dad has become more forgetful. Meals are more of a problem. Home maintenance is becoming too much of a burden. Worry about safety issues increases.

There are many signs, and they usually become more pronounced over time. Eventually, isolated problems multiply, making daily living more complex and worrisome. A variety of issues and abilities may prevent seniors from meeting their everyday needs in their own home. Even if they still "get around" easily and have no physical issues, other things may affect a loved one's ability to cook a meal or clean the house.

  • How can I be sure John Knox Village is right for my parents or loved one?

The first thing we recommend is that you visit our community and talk to staff and residents.
